Combined Mission Conference

こんにちわ! みんあ元気?先週は素晴らしかったです。

Hello family! How are you all doing?

This week was great! Not a ton happened. We didn't have a lot of appointments, but we made some for this week, so I'm excited!

We started off
the week by going to the temple on Tuesday, which was amazing! I love, love, love the Tokyo Temple! Fun fact: it's the most expensive temple in the world. Then after the temple, I actually got a pretty big headache from out of the blue, so we stayed home the rest of the day.

The next day I woke up with the same headache. Even though my head was bothering me, we continued on as normal. We went on splits that day, and I was with a newer sister here in Machida. She's actually going through a pretty hard time with dendo right now too, so we pretty much just talked the whole day and gave each other advice. It was much needed because after we finished talking, my head felt better! I guess I just had a lot of pressure and stress built up in there. My head's felt better since then, so I'm way happy we went on splits.

On Friday, we went to Sagamihara (the city next to Machida) for a "Questions of the Soul" event. It's an event that President Wada puts on around the mission, and we watch clips of a movie and talk about a gospel principle. This time we watched a movie about Ghandi and talked about charity and faith. It was great, and the spirit was really strong! We brought one of our friends who really seemed to enjoy it.

Saturday was the best day ever! We woke up at 4:50am to get on a train for the Combined Mission Conference, where Elder Cook (of the Twelve)and Elder Maynes (of the presidency of the Seventy) spoke to all the missionaries in the both Tokyo and Tokyo South mission. Before the actual talks thought, we got to spend about an hour just talking to all of our friends, which was way fun! A lot of good reunions. In all, there were about 400 missionaries there. The talks given were incredible! We were so spiritually uplifted. At one point, all the missionaries stood up and sang, "Hark All Ye Nations," which was so powerful. We were all ready to talk to all of Tokyo after that! We got to shake their hands too, which was incredible. We may be getting a new apartment soon! Wahoo!! Can't wait for that!

Sunday was great too! We had a baptism for two of our ward mission leaders kids who turned 8! It was so cute! It reminded me of my own baptism day a long time ago, and it reminded me of how it's so important for my own kids to be baptized when they turn 8 (but that's in the very far future).

That's about all the exciting things that happened this week! I love being a missionary here in Japan. It's changed my life, and I know I'll remember it forever. The church is true! I have no doubt in my mind about that! I love you all and miss you! Have a good week! Talk to you next week!
Love,

The Lord's Hand

Hello family! Again, it was so great to talk to you last week! I absolutely loved it!

Pretty interesting week this week! I think I've felt a lot of stress in the past couple of days because I've been trying to adjust to being area senpai, which is a little intense, especially because I'm only transfer 4, but that's ok. President Wada said to, "not get too comfortable where I'm at," so I don't know what that means, but I guess we will see! Our mission is really growing, so I suspect I'll be training next or the following transfer.

Sorry, little rant there. As for this week, I know it's been really guided by The Lord. We've done a lot of less active member visits, which has been an adventure trying to find their houses. On Thursday though, I actually got a little frustrated because things weren't working out I planned. We couldn't find one person's houses, we were late, all these things were happening. But guess who I ran into? E! It's been like three months now since I've seen her, so it was a really happy reunion. I know The Lord placed her in our path. It was a really amazing miracle! We talked to her for a little bit, and she might come to an activity we have at the church in a couple of weeks. I hope I get to see her!

Another thing that happened this week was E Shimai's birthday! She's one of the sisters that lives with me. She turned 22 this week, so we had a big party! We invited some of our friends to go bowling with us, so that was way fun! We decorated the apartment all cute too. It was so fun! I think she had a great day!

One other cool thing happened this week. We were out talking to people just yesterday, when the Elders called us. They said they had met a woman outside of the church who had met the missionaries 10 years before. They said she wanted to meet with us that night! So we were went over to her apartment last night! We talked to her for a long time. She had a baptismal date before but missed it because she couldn't stop drinking tea. She said she still had interest in studying this church and being baptized! We are meeting her again on Friday, and we will start teaching her the lessons again! That was a huge miracle that the elders found her! She said she actually was thinking about the missionaries when she saw the elders, so she ran towards them to talk to them. I'm praying that we can help grow her faith so that she can get baptized!

That's about all for this week! I get to go to the temple tomorrow, so I can't wait for that! Also, Elder Cook (of the Twelve) is coming to our mission on Saturday for a combined Tokyo North and South mission conference. Cool, right?

I hope you all have a good week! I love you and miss you! Thank you for all the support! I pray for you all everyday! Love you!
愛しています。

Happy Mother's Day!

Hello! It was so fun to talk to you all! It made my whole week! I'm glad to know you're all doing well!

I love you all so much!

Here's a little bit about my week:

M Shimai transferred to Kawasaki, so T Shimai came to Machida. At M Shimai's last English class in Machida, we had like a going away party and we all had ice cream together. This week's English class had more students than ever! we had like 10 new students come, which was really cool. We had a really fun time together. We also went to a Tapioca shop earlier that morning, and we were able to start to talk to two girls who knew about Sports Night, so we invited them to come to it. That was a cool little miracle!

Because M Shimai transferred, I am now the companion that knows the area the best. We call it "area senpai". T Shimai is an older missionary, she actually goes home in two transfers, but she's never been in Machida before. So it's a little stressful on me because I have to remember where everything is and everything about each investigator and PIs. That's all I could think about the first couple of days of the transfer, which I guess is not a bad thing! It's definitely stressful though.  I've learned more about how to rely on The Lord though in order to understand what our friends need. That's been a cool experience!

Not much else happened this week. We rode our bikes a lot, so my legs are really tired, but they're getting strong so no big deal. We also had a new ward mission leader called in our ward from the Philippines, so went over to his house for dinner this week. It's cool too because we get to talk in English! He has a lot of ideas about how to get the ward involved, so we are really excited to have him.

Not much else happened this week. Like I said, talking to you via Skype was great! I love you all so much, and I miss you. Have a good week! The church is true! Love you!

Love,

Machida Adventure Continues!

Hey everyone! How are you? We had a little startle this morning as an earthquake woke us up at 5:15 a.m. It was a little scary, but it only lasted for about 10 seconds. I think it was about a 4, so we got shaken pretty good. All is fine though! That's not the first earthquake I've felt here, so no big deal.

We also got our transfer calls today! I can't believe I'm on my 4th transfer now. It blows my mind! I'm staying in Machida again! I'm so excited to keep working here. I feel like I'll be in Machida for a few more transfers. M Shimai has spent 7 transfers in Machida, so I could be the same as her!

It's been a pretty good week! We had a lot of rain on Wednesday, so we passed our English class flyers at one of the train stops. Then afterwards we went to English class which was great as always! We didn't have Bible class this week because a lot of people didn't come because of the rain.

Thursday was fun because I got to go dendo in Fussa while M Shimai was at a leadership training meeting. I was the senior companion that day, but we talked to a lot of people. Then on the train ride back, we met a church member as well as 6 high school girls that wanted to practice English and took a picture with us. I'm so going to miss being normal when I come back to America! After that, we went to a French Toast/ping pong party at the church which was a lot of fun. A couple of our friends came, as well as some church members. It was way fun!

Nothing really happened on Friday, but Saturday was good. We went to a nearby grand opening of a park, and we talked to a lot of people there. One funny thing for this week, so I've discovered on my mission that I talk in my sleep. Every morning, the sisters always tell me what I said the night before. It's so embarrassing!! Apparently this week, I was talking in Japanese! Weird! I've started having Japanese dreams! I really wish I could control this sleep talking thing, because it got so bad this week that I actually woke myself up from talking! Haha it's way embarrassing! Oh well.

Sunday was good. We talked a lot about family history, which was exciting. We are going to start trying to use family history more with our investigators. We also went to visit the lady in the hospital again, but this time we went with the priests in our ward to pass the sacrament to her. We gave out a Korean Book of Mormon while we were there to her roommate's mom, and the same lady, as well as 2 others, took the sacrament. We hope she joins the church one day!

That's about all that happened this week! I love you, and I can't wait to talk to you next week! Have a good week! Love you!

Mountains to Climb

Hello family! Long time no see! 6 months now. Time has flown by for me! I'll see you in a year! But we have Skype time here soon, so I'm excited! I'm still not sure of the exact details, but I know it's only supposed to be a 40 minute Skype call, so that's kind of sad. I'll let you know more details when I find out more!

Things in Machida have been pretty good. Monday we went to an aquarium in Shonan, Tokyo, which was fun! It was a huge aquarium, and it was right next to the ocean. I got to touch a dolphin, so I was happy. I also got to touch a shark and an octopus! It was the weirdest feeling having it suck my finger.

On Wednesday instead of going to regular English class, M Shimai and I started an English Bible class where we read the Bible together with some of the English class students. It was a way cool experience! We read the last chapter in Matthew together since it was Easter recently. Because the Japanese people don't know a lot about Christianity, they didn't know about any of it, so it was really great to learn about Christ with them. I also learned something! You know the word "banzai"? It's a Japanese word that means "all hail" kind of. I had no idea! I thought it was just something you said when you jumped into a pool!

On Thursday we went to visit a member of our ward who is in the hospital. It was a great experience. Turns out she first learned about the church when her son was in the hospital and she was given a Book of Mormon. Now she wants to pay it forward and give Book of Mormons to everyone in the hospital while she is there! We were actually able to give out one and we met a Korean woman who wanted one too. The lady in the hospital was a great example to me because even though she is in the circumstances she is in, she is still so full of light and you can feel Christ-like love radiating from her. I learned a lot from her! Hopefully we get to go back and visit her again soon.

Saturday was a cool experience! We got all the missionaries in the zone together and we went to Tama for four hours to tell people about family history! We streeted, housed and passed out Family History papers. We had some pretty cool stories come from it! One elder talked to a guy who wants to talk to his parents more, and because he received a family history paper he can now! We also met a PI who has met with missionaries before while doing this. I had a cool story too! I saw two foreigner girls looking at a map, so I went up and talked to them. They were from Sicily, and they said I was the first foreigner to talk to them, so they asked to take a picture with me! It was way fun!

As for the title of this email, I read President Eyring's "Mountains to Climb" talk from April 2012 Conference, and M Shimai and I made it a goal to ask for our own mountain to climb as a companionship so that through a trial, we may be able to become the best missionaries possible. Nothing has really happened yet, but we are still working and being obedient as possible! One funny thing though, when we asked for a mountain to climb, we literally got one because we went hiking yesterday. We went to Mt. Takao and it was beautiful! We saw Mt. Fuji from the top. It was a way fun hike. The people that took us to the houses went on the hike with us too. I'm kind of sore from the hike, but it was fun.

That's about all for this week! I love you all so much! I'll talk to you soon! 愛しています

How to Talk Yourself Out of an Apartment Contract ‏

Hello, family! How are you? Everything in Japan is great, it's just been pretty cold here the last couple of days. Weird!

Funny story for the week! So E Shimai (a new sister in Machida from Alaska) went to visit a PI, but we had never been to her house before. So I asked a lady how to get there, and because she is so nice, she walks us all the way there! But turns out there are three of the same apartments, and she had walked us to the first, but we wanted to go to the third. So a nice lady working there sat us down and showed us a map about how to get to the 3 apartment. Now, our Japanese isn't that good, so we only understood about half of what this lady said to us. She did, however, offer to drive us to the apartment. Be politely said no, because we had our bikes. Then she offered to meet us there! At this point, we are thinking, "Wow, she is really nice!" When we get there, we say, "Our friend lives on this floor, thank you so much!" And she says, "That's great, the new apartment is on the top floor." So, the whole time she thought we were looking to buy a new apartment, when in reality we just wanted to visit our friend. It was really awkward when we finally explained that to her. It was way funny though! We laughed about it the whole day!

Some other cool things happened this week. Japanese people are the nicest people in the world because they want to do so much for you. For example, these people that we met at Rajio Taiso took us to a really old, Japanese house museum, and it was incredible! We were able to talk to them a little bit about the gospel. We had a way fun day with them.

For Easter yesterday, we had a great day! It's not a big holiday in Japan, but we had a lot of fun at the church. I actually had to talk in church, but then they had an Easter program after church where we watched an Easter video and had food. It was great! We had a couple of PIs come! We had a lot of fun! Also, that same night we went over to a member's house and had food with them. Then afterwards we all sat around a listened to music because that family has like a music studio. It was a blast!

One other crazy thing that happened this week! M Shimai And I were sitting in the church working on some FB things, then all of the sudden the stake president comes in and asks us to introduce ourselves. When we walked around the corner to see who it was, we were super shocked! It was Sister Linda Burton! Like the General Relief Society President!!! She talked to us for a little bit and gave us a hug! It was incredible! We also met her husband! (Fun fact: he went to Bingham High School). That was a once in a lifetime opportunity! She was so incredible, I want to be just like her!

That's about all for this week! We are going to an aquarium today, so I can't wait! I love you all so much! Talk to you next week!

Always Have an Attitude of Gratitude!

愛する家族。こんにちわ!

I know I said last week my email day was Tuesday, but just kidding! We decided to email today since Temple days are so busy. I'm so excited to go to the temple though!

It's been a pretty good week! I loved watching Conference as a missionary! It was amazing! I've never been more excited to watch it in my life! Sunday morning was great, and so was Elder Holland's talk, but I think my favorite one was President Uchtdorf's talk about gratitude. That even in times of trial, we need to be grateful and be faithful that we will get through said trial. I also loved President Eyring's talk about hope and making covenants with God. Conference was awesome!

We had a lesson with a lady who's son is on a mission right now, and he has been talking to her about the Book of Mormon over Facebook. She knows a lot about the Gospel, and she says she can't get baptized, but hopefully we will help build her faith and her desire to get baptized will grow. She's the cutest, and her son wrote us on Facebook and he said, "she loves you two." It's so cute! I hope she gets baptized in the future! We did a lot of passing out of English class flyers this week, so we talked to a lot of people. We talk to a lot of people because they're so interested why we are two white girls speaking Japanese.

Also, the single adults in our ward had an okinomiyaki party this week, so we invited a lot of our friends to it and we had a church tour. It was way fun! We met one girl on the street an hour before the party and invited her, and she came! It was so fun!

Today, we went with some of our PIs to the Ghibli museum, which is just a museum about anime. I'm not into anime, but it was a way cool museum! We will have to go when you come to Japan! It was so fun!

Not much else happened this week, but the Japanese missionary that lived with us got transferred. We are so sad! But the new sister that lives with us in Machida is way cute, so we are happy.

I love you so much! I'll talk to you on Skype in like a month!! Have a good week! I love you!
